Blu-ray DVD ousted

For the first time pulls the Blu-ray market past DVD players. The sale of DVD players dropped by a fifth.

(Berlin, 08/08/2010) Less than fifteen years, DVD players arrived in Germany on the market and subsequently replaced the VCR. Now they are being supplanted by its successor the Blu-ray players.

Official position switch happens in 2011

Sales of DVD players is shrinking this year, probably by a quarter (24 percent) to 250 million euros, sales of the devices by a fifth (20 percent) to 2.4 million units. Demand for Blu-ray players, however, doubled in this country to over one million pieces. That gave the high-tech association Bitkom known on the basis of current data from the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO).

"The official changing of the guard is already in 2011: Then the sales of Blu-ray players for the first time surpass the profits with DVD players," said Jeffry van Ede of Bitkom Bureau.

High-resolution picture quality



Blu-ray players especially benefit from the trend towards high-resolution images and 3D. They currently offer the only optical storage medium sufficient space for 3D movies in the highest image quality, the so-called full HD resolution. The quality difference between DVDs for sale and Blu-ray is especially evident on large screens: Blu-ray shows up to five times more picture elements. The picture quality is even higher than current HDTV broadcasts on television. Other advantages of the new technology: The sound quality is better. Moreover, in many new Blu-ray players is an Internet connection and thus combine the integrated TV with the Web.

Prices for Blu-ray players fall

Despite technological progress, the price difference between DVD and Blu-ray players getting smaller: The average unit price for DVD player falls this year from 109 to 104 €, the Blu-ray player, however, from 220 to 170 €.
