Blu-ray DVD ousted

For the first time pulls the Blu-ray market past DVD players. The sale of DVD players dropped by a fifth.

(Berlin, 08/08/2010) Less than fifteen years, DVD players arrived in Germany on the market and subsequently replaced the VCR. Now they are being supplanted by its successor the Blu-ray players.

Official position switch happens in 2011

Sales of DVD players is shrinking this year, probably by a quarter (24 percent) to 250 million euros, sales of the devices by a fifth (20 percent) to 2.4 million units. Demand for Blu-ray players, however, doubled in this country to over one million pieces. That gave the high-tech association Bitkom known on the basis of current data from the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO).

"The official changing of the guard is already in 2011: Then the sales of Blu-ray players for the first time surpass the profits with DVD players," said Jeffry van Ede of Bitkom Bureau.
